Flecheiras and Guarjirú, hidden pearls of Ceará

Flecheiras

Flecheiras

When planning a trip to Ceará you are most probably considering such well-known destinations as Jeriacoacoara, Cumbuco or Canoa Quebrada. However this sunny and windy state has many other secret places to explore, such as Guajirú and Flecheiras. These real hideaways are synonyms of tranquility and comfort. They are beachside destinations where you will not find crowds of mass tourism and other symbols of stressful life. Guajirú and Flecheiras are real hiddean pearls fo Ceará!

Guajirú

Guajirú

Flecheiras and Guajirú are two tiny beach side villages located one next to another, roughly about 150 km north of Fortaleza. The access is quite easy as the road is in good conditions and as long as you follow the sign of Traíri (the principal municipality) you won’t get lost. On your way make sure you stop in the small town of Lagoinha, just to admire the spectacular views over the beach and take some incredible photos in your album. If you are not in a hurry enjoy a refreshing bath in the sea before you continue yor journey. In case you are not interested in renting a car contract a private transfer taking you directly from the airport to your final destination.

Flecheiras beach boulevard

Flecheiras beach boulevard

Well, let’s get into the point. Why Flecheiras and Guajirú? These two villages are located behind immense dunes, have an endless white sand beach and enjoy such a peaceful tranquility, something that will guarantee your rest. During the heat of the day the streets of the village are basically empty, many of the stores are closed and only few tourists enjoy the rays of sun light. When the night falls the things doesn’t change too much. The stores open their doors, but the rhythm of life remains as peaceful as during the entire day. It’s simply impossible to get stressed here. Out of these two Flecheiras is slightly bigger than Guajirú, but just slightly, as the two of them are pretty small fishermen villages anyway. In Flecheiras you will find few beach side restaurants servings meals and drinks, while in Guajirú this sort of service is offered only by the few hotels located right in front of the sea.

Mundaú

Mundaú

There are not that many activities to do in these two villages, unless you want to take a buggy ride along the beach either to Lagoinha or to Jericoacoara. An alternative option is  to visit the nearby city of Mundaú and take a sunset river cruise along the Mundaú river. Even if you won’t take the sunset excursion a quick visit to Mundaú is worth it as the river view together with the dunes and the sparkling sea is simply spectacular. The lovers of kitesurf will find the winds of Ceará excellent for the practise of their favourite sport.

Guajirú

Guajirú

Beside of the activity options mentioned above my recommendation is to relax and enjoy, that’s what Flecheiras and Guajirú are made for. Lay down in a hammock and watch the sun setting down slowly. For a moment it feels like if the time had stopped and all the worries of the world disappered. This blue moment filled with tranquility and harmony is such a heavenly experience, something to be remembered long after your trip to Flecheiras and Guajirú.

Brazil Diversity recommends:

  • Pousada do Paiva, Flecheiras – An good tourist class pousada in the heart of Flecheiras. Pousada do Paiva has a lovely garden with many details and spacious rooms with balconies, half of them facing the sea.
  • Art Orixas, Flecheiras – A luxury hotel with art details, very stylish and spacious rooms with private pool and garden or seaview. A real hideaway for lovers!
  • Rede Beach Resort, Guajirú – A quality hotel with rustic details, excellent comfort and direct beach access. Highly recommended!
  • Restaurante Oca do Sabor, Flecheiras – One of the best, if not the best restaurant of the region! Don’t leave Flecheiras without having experienced a tasty dinner in the rustic ambient of Oca do Sabor.
  • Kalango Lounge Bar, Flecheiras –  A place to enjoy a cold drink at the end of the night while listening lounge music and watching torch fires on the beach.

Cumbuco: Kite surfers paradise

Cumbuco beach

Cumbuco beach

The village of Cumbuco is located only about 35 km from Fortaleza to north. It enjoys an easy and quick access either from the international airport of Fortaleza or from the center of the state capital. Cumbuco is a small holiday villages with large number of pousadas, resorts and residencial apartments. It’s a destination for a traveller who wants to enjoy the cozy atmospheare and in the meanwhile be close to a major city.

Cumbuco village

Cumbuco village

Cumbuco is an extremely popular kite surf destination and therefore receives a large number of tourists from all over the world. The second half of the year is the best moment to enjoy the never ending winds of Ceará. If you are not an active kite-surfer take a basic course and get familiar with this facinating water sport. Beside of kite-surf enjoy the beaches of Cumbuco and visit the nearby fresh water lagoons out of which Lagoa do Banana is the most popular one and perfect for water activities, sunbathing and fun. Before the end of the day take a buggy drive over the dunes and admire a spectacular sunset from the top of them. If you are into longer day trips, a buggy drive along the coast takes you to other beach side villages, including the picturesque beach of Lagoinha.

Kite surfers on the beach

Kite surfers on the beach

Cumbuco is not a hideaway, it’s raither a destination for an active holiday maker who enjoys the leisure activities and infrastructure offered by this small village. I would say Cumbuco is an excellent destination for two types of tourists. First of all the lovers of water sports, especially kite surfers. Thanks to them Cumbuco has a very young spirit and vibrating night life every single day of the week, from Monday till Sunday. Secondly families. Quick access from the international airport of Fortaleza and excellent infrastructure with quality resorts and all inclusive options attracts families to spend their beach side holiday in Cumbuco. Cumbuco is a mixture of comfort and hospitality right next to Fortaleza.

Dunes of Cumbuco

Brazil Diversity recommends:

  • Dunelodge 0031A lovely pousada next to the immense dunes and just few hundred meters from the beach. Decorated with good taste Dunelodge 0031 offers hospitality and excellent value for money.
  • Bar & Restaurant 0031 – A place for you to enjoy yourself during the evenings. Bar & Restaurant 0031 offers an interesting menu, good music and cozy atmospheare for you to get relaxed.
  • Laranja Mecânica – When the night falls the party is guaranteed in Laranja Mecânica, a beach side bar with contemporary pop music.

My top places in Brazil

Sunset llha do Algodoal

Sunset llha do Algodoal

Top Beach Destination: Brazil is full of beaches and it’s hard to define if one more beautiful than another and it’s even harder to name a favourite beach destination. Out of all the beaches that I have visited each of them have their particular beauty. However when it comes to a beach destination, it’s not only to the beach itself that matters. There are few other facts that I personally enjoy when choosing a beach destination. I know some might like popular beaches where the rich and the beautiful locals hang around during their spare time, however I like raither distant destinations with less touristic infrastucture and a touch of the good old days when all the natural resources wasn’t yet explored. I like the destination that disconnects me more than totally from the rush and the run of every day life and makes me feel myself at the edge of the world. Therefore my top beach destination with these characteristic is the Ilha do Algodoal, a tropical island in the northern corner of Brazil. This extremely beautiful place incentivates you to listen to the voices of the nature, to pay attention to the endless horizon and to breath like if there were no worries in the entire world. For me Ilha do Algodoal is a real paradise on the earth.

Lencois Maranhenses

Lencois Maranhenses

Top Eco-Tourism Destination: Just like beaches, Brazil is also full of interesting eco-tourism destinations. There is everything from hiking to wildlife observation, from fishing to discovering the wonders of submarine life. There are also few unique phenomenon that can only observed here in Brazil. Pantanal happens to be world’s biggest wetland, the delta of Parnaíba on the other hand is the biggest delta of the Americas and naturally the Amazon rainforest is one in kind. However when it comes to top eco-tourism destination in Brazil, my choise  is Lencois Maranhenses, a simply unique and absolutely interesting region located in the state of Maranhão. This immense area with very fragile eco-system is formed by numerous sparkling lagoons hidden in between the white sand dunes. It’s a unique phenomenon that can only be observed in this dry region thanks to rainy season and the approximity to the Amazon basis. Lencois Maranhenses is an off-road eco-tourism experience that will surely impress you!

Ouro Preto

Ouro Preto

Top Historical Destination: I use to say that you haven’t seen all the faces of Brazil unless you have visited Ouro Preto. You might think that travelling all the way to Minas Gerais just to spend few days in Ouro Preto is not worth it, but I do guarantee that you will be surprised. Ouro Preto is the face of colonial Brazil. It’s a destination where you will be surrounded by history and art, no matter which part of the city you are. Ouro Preto takes you to an imaginary trip back to the past and captures all your attention with neverending details of this charming city. Simply a must see destination!

Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

Top City Break: It might sounds like a cliché, but top city break must be the marvellous city of Rio de Janeiro, simply because of the variety of options it offers for a traveller. Beyond the traditional touristic sights Rio de Janeiro works as a city break for lovers of gourmet kitchen, for tireless party animal, for those who enjoy music and art and for the ones who enjoy chilling on the beach or practising sports. For me Rio de Janeiro is the top city break destination exactly because of its’ diversity and of course, also because of its’ unique beauty, which can be admired at any corner of the city.

Top Beach: Choosing one breach out of all the irresistible Brazilian beaches is a real challenge.  Year after year the beaches of Fernando Noronha are included into the top beaches of the country and there is no doubt that the beaches like Praia do Sancho, Praia do Leão and Baía dos Porcos aren’t some of the most  stunning beaches of Brazil, simply because of the clear turquoise and blue tones of the sea and the beautiful and well conserved landscapes of Fernando de Noronha. Beside of the archipelago, there area lovely white sand beaches with clear waters in many parts of the continent as well. In the state of Alagoas a large number of palm threes give a pictoresque appareance for the coastline, while in Ceará and Maranhão the dunes give raither a stark, but beautiful contrast for the sparkling sea.

Praia do Pesqueiro

Praia do Pesqueiro

So finally, out of all these beautiful beaches, which would I choose to be my top beach? My choise ia maybe a less known, but simply unique with a genuine feeling of an untouched beach. My top beach is Praia do Pesqueiro in the island of Marajó, located at the state of Pará, in northern most corner of Brazil. Praia do Pequeiro is a beach where the waters of a river get mixed to the sea. The water in fact is sweet, but the feeling is like if you were enjoying a bath at any seaside beach. Even smooth waves and a warm wind will refresh you in the heat of Pará. There are few rustic beach bars that serve ice cold drinks and light meals so that you can easily spend an entire day at this little paradise. The landscape is a beautiful mixture of tropical vegetation, natural swimming pools during  the low tide and endless views over this almost deserted beach. During the low season only few other tourists together with a couple of distant water buffalos and numerous sea birds will give you company. Simply a lovely place and a fantastic beach for you to enjoy youself in the middle of the virgin nature far away from the signs of modern life and from the rush and run of the cities.

Chapada Diamantina

Chapada Diamantina

Top Combination: Top combination is a region or state that allows you to experince the different faces of Brazil with no need for domestic flights or endless travelling. My top destination of this category is the regions of Salvador combined with eco-tourism experiences in Chapada Diamantina and beachside extention in the tropical islands of Tinharé and Boipeba. This simple combinations allows you to enjoy the afro-brazilian culture and colonial architecture in Salvador, the capital of Bahia, experience the inlands and practise hiking in South America’s top one hiking destination, Chapada Diamantina and last but not least enjoy the stunning beaches of Morro de São Paulo and maybe even extend your stay to the less crowded island of Boipepa, both of them filled with palm trees and most importantly with no motorized traffic to disturb you. A facinating combination that allows you to experience the best of Bahia with no need to spend and time on the airports!

Top Pousada: Naming a top pousada is a pretty tough question, maybe because I’m pretty critic when it comes to perfection or maybe many of them have been at expected level, but still it’s hard to say which one would be simply outstanding. So after having tought about the options, I decided to let you know my overall top pousada, my top charm pousada and my top service pousada.

Casarão da Amazônia

Casarão da Amazônia

The first one goes to Casarão da Amazônia, a simply lovely pousada in the island of Marajó, in Pará. Casarão da Amazônia has a perfect location in the village of Souré, close to the top beaches and interesting eco-tourism sights. It’s an old colonial mansion reformed with excellent taste and surrounded by a garden with pool area. And after all it’s not just the appearance and comfort, it’s also about the friendliness of the stuff and the great value for money that Casarão da Amazônia offers for its’ guests.

When it comes to charm I would name Vila Serrano, in the village of Lencois (Chapada Diamantina), in Bahia. This tiny pousada is a enchanting combination of colonial style, feng shui and comfort. The individually decorated rooms have and romantic ambient and even the public areas of this lovely pousada are in full harmony with the nature. Simply charming!

Top service wasn’t actually difficult at all. It goes clearly to Barra Velha, a pousada located in Maragogi, the state of Alagoas. I know the northeastern Brazil is known for hospitality, tasty food and generous breakfast, but still a stay at Barra Velha went over all my expectations when it comes to the hospitality. Being welcomed by the owners and attented with an attitude that went beyond our needs and expectations was something that made the service of Barra Velha extraordinary. Really a place to feel yourself at  home!

Top Restaurant: When I travel I usually enjoy trying different restaurants, tasting several options and discovering new experiences. Basically this means that unless the food is simply irresistible I rarely eat more than once or maximum twice in the same place, and in that case I surely taste two different dishes. However there do have been few exceptions being one of them over the others. I usually ask for restaurant recommendations from the staff of my pousada or hotel. This is exactly what I did in Canoa Quebrada as well. I was recommended to eat in a restaurant called Cabana, located right on Broadway, the main street of Canoa Quebrada. After having experienced Cabana I found myself repeating the experice even more than tiwce. I tried several dishes and time after time ended more and more satisfield. Cabana offer absolutely tasty food with first class incredients and great value for money. Cannot recommend more!

It wasn’t easy and my top places might change at any moment of time,

but today these are top choices in Brazil.

Travelling in Brazil is always a pleasure, it’s full of nice surprises and after all…

Stressless holiday in Jericoacoara, Ceará

Quite often I hear people wondering weather they should spend two weeks holiday in Fortaleza or in Canoa Quebrada or Jericoacoara in stead. I’m sure that as we all have our own style of travelling there are travellers who will be fully **Tyytyväinen** after having spent two weeks in Fortaleza, but to be absolutely honest I do think that if we made a little test the **suurinosa** of the travellers who be happier after having decided to include an another destination in their itinerary.
When we talk about Fortaleza, it’s good to remember that we talk about a huge city with more than XXX inhabitants. It’s the capital of the state of Ceará and also one of the biggest cities in the northeastern coast. So before you a two weeks holiday package in Fortaleza, think twice if you which to spend the holiday of your dreams in a city with crowded beaches, heavy traffic and not too many cultural or historical sights. The size of the city also brings the other side effects, such as crime level and prostitution which often end up surprising the travellers. I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be worth stopping in Fortaleza for few days, but once that you have travelled as far as to Brazil makes sure you see the best of Ceará, which can be found just few hours drive away from the state capital.
In a previous blog post we already discussed about the wonders of Canoa Quebrada, so that’s why it’s time to bring up an another wonders destination in the coast of Ceará, Jericoacoara. The access to Jericoacoara is slightly trickier than to Canoa Quebrada, but once you reach this former fisherman village, you will quickly notice that it worth sitting approximately four hours in a car. There are basically two different options to reach Jericoacoara. A private 4×4 transfer from Fortaleza is the most comfortabel way to reach the village. An anothe option is to take a collective minibus until XXXX and then after an alternative open-air transportation with “jardinera” over the dunes.
If you think the transfer time to Jericoacoara or Canoa Quebrada is far too long and tiring  for you choose Cumbuco in stead. It’s located just about 40 minutes drive from Fortaleza and offers a fully different atmospheare.

Quite often I hear people wondering weather they should spend a two weeks holiday in Fortaleza or maybe in smaller places like Canoa Quebrada and Jericoacoara. We all have our way and our style to travel, one loves urban city life, other traveller prefers to escape from it. Therefore I’m positive that there are travellers who are fully satisfield after having spent a two weeks holiday in Fortaleza, but to be absolutely honest I do think that if we made a little test the majority of the travellers would be happier after having decided to combine Fortaleza with some other less urban brazilian destination.

Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara

When we talk about Fortaleza, it’s good to remember that we talk about a huge city with more than 2,5 millions of inhabitants. It’s the capital of the state of Ceará and also the 5th biggest city of the country. So before you bpook a two weeks holiday package in Fortaleza, think twice if you wish to spend the holiday of your dreams in a city with crowded beaches, heavy traffic and not too many cultural or historical sights. The size of the city also brings the other side effects, such as crime level and prostitution which in most of the cases ends up to be a surprise for the travellers. I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be worth stopping in Fortaleza for few days, but once that you have travelled as far as to Brazil makes sure you see the best of Ceará, which can be found just few hours drive away from the state capital.

Paradise

Paradise

In our previous blog post we already discussed about the wonders of Canoa Quebrada, so that’s why it’s time to bring up an another wonderful destination in the coast of Ceará. It’s called Jericoacoara, or simply Jeri as locals prefer to call it. The access to Jericoacoara is slightly trickier than to Canoa Quebrada, but once you reach this former fisherman village, you will quickly notice that it worth sitting approximately four hours in a car. There are basically two different ways to reach Jericoacoara. A private 4×4 transfer from Fortaleza is the most comfortable way to reach the village. An another option is to take a collective minibus until Jijoca and then after an alternative open-air transportation “jardinera” over the dunes.

Lagoa Paraiso

Lagoa Paraiso

So as you already may have guessed Jericoacoara is surrounded by dunes and has no real roads nor asphalt. The streets are sandy, and beach buggies or 4×4 cars are basically the only motorized traffic circulating in the village. The charm of Jericoacoara turned it quickly as one of the most popular destinations in the state of Ceará. Nowadays you will find a large number of tourism services, such as pousadas, restaurants and tours, but still the easygoing atmospheare is always present in Jericoacoara. In the village itself the principal attraction is the beach. It’s a perfect place to enjoy the warm waves or the neverending sun in one of the many beach bars. Thanks to the strong winds of Ceará, Jericoacoara is an excellent place to practise both windsurf and kitesurf. It’s number one windsurf destination in Brazil and one of the best spots in the world as well. The beaches of the regions also fit for surfers, being the principal beach suitable for beginners and the beach of Malhada the best option for advanced surfers. For surfing the best period of the year is from December till April, when the waves get bigger and the wind is lighter.

Mangrove

Mangrove

There are a lot of things to do nearby Jericoacoara as well. Just a simple walk away (one hour per way) from the village and you will reache Pedra Furada, an arched rock, that has became a symbol of Jericoacoara. It’s a great place to take wonderful pictures with the sparkling sea or the sunset in the background. The beach buggy excursions to some of the many lagoons located in the middle of the dunes are a popular attraction in Jericoacoara, don’t miss them out. The most popular ones are Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Tatajuba and Lagoa do Paraiso. These fresh water lagoons are perfect places to enjoy a bath and some tasty shrimps or other local specialities in beautiful natural settings…or why don’t you just lay down in one of the over water hammocks available at Lagoa Tatajuba and Lagoa Paraiso. If you have a chance visit all the three lagoon, if not we would advise you to choose our personal favourite Lagoa do Paraiso. It offers nice infrastructure, excellent waters for a bath and amazingly beautiful landscapes mixturing dunes and green vegetation. In addition to the lagoons the buggy excursions often include some other activities like sandboarding in the dunes, visiting a cashew farm or searching for sea horses in a river surrounded by dead mangrove trees.

Sunset Jericoacoara

Sunset Jericoacoara

Just before the sunset, everybody in Jericoacoara heads on the top of the main dune to enjoy a spectacular sunset over the sea. This is something not to be missed. In the evening time you can also watch the capoeiristas practising this traditional fight dance on the beach. The night of Jericoacoara is as relaxed as the day, no need for formal dressing, your flip flops are as useful during the night as during the day. The only difference is that during the night time you will propably find a lot more people on the streets of the village. Days are for the excursions and other activities, but during the night time the streets of the village are lively again. The night of Jericoacoara offers something for each and every taste, and especially during the high season in many places you can listen to live music as well. There is absolutely no hurry to enjoy the night life of Jericoacoara, just like the days the nights are long as well…

If you are still wondering whether you should stay two weeks in Fortaleza or not, we have a third option for you. The longer transfer times to Jericoacoara or to Canoa Quebrada may have scared you out, in this case opt for Cumbuco in stead. This laid back holiday village, that offers a relaxing atmospheare is a located just about 30 minutes drive from Fortaleza. We will discuss more about Cumbuco in our future blog posts…in the meanwhile keep enjoying the brazilian hospitality!

Check out our blog post about Canoa Quebrada.

If you are looking for a resort kind of holiday with fancy services you better turn your attention elsewhere.
