Paradise beaches in Barra Grande and Taipú de Fora, Bahia

Barra Grande

Barra Grande

Are you looking for paradise beaches? If so, pay a closer look for Barra Grande and Taipú de Fora, both located in southern Bahia, in the peninsula of Maraú.

These two villages are like  post cards from paradise, perfect places to relax and forget the stress of every day life. If you enjoy simple life and the lightness of being this is your destination, no need to rush and run from one sight to another or fight for a beach chair. No, here you can just lay down and watch how the palms trees gently swing in the warm winds of Bahia.

Taipú de Fora

Taipú de Fora

This paradise destination is located about 200km south of Salvador, 150km north of Ilheus and 70km north of Itacaré, an another popular beach destination in southern Bahia. So knowing these details it’s easy to find out the best way to reach this lovely peninsula. First thing to do is to take a flight either to Salvador or to Ilheus, then a transfer to Camamu and again either a regular boat or a speed boat to Barra Grande.  We do recommend a speed boat as it takes only about 30 min compared to 1½ hours of a regular boat. For a foreign tourist even the price difference is not that significant. The alternative ways to reach Barra Grande are either a bimotor flight from Salvador to the airport located at Kiaroa Resort or a raither tiring 4×4 land transfer via Itacaré all the way to Barra Grande or Taipú de Fora.

As soon as you arrive to Barra Grande you will realize why I’m comparing this peninsula to paradise on earth. Barra Grande is a lovely mixture of sandy beaches, palm trees, transparent waters and tropical climate. It’s also the principal village of Maraú peninsula, while the famous reefs creating natural swimming pools are located in Taipú de Fora. Where should you stay then? In case you are simply looking for relaxation and enjoy spending plenty of time in your resort opt for Taipú de Fora, but if you raither prefer village life with dining options, bars, restaurants, stores and other activities outside of you hotel or pousada stay in Barra Grande. Barra Grande is a lovely village with sandy streets, charming restaurants and a main square around which the warm nights of Bahia can be enjoyed.

Ponta do Mutá

Ponta do Mutá

During your stay you will surely enjoy the sun and the beaches, but don’t forget to take some of the principal tours. In case you are staying in Barra Grande take a tour to Taipú de Fora and enjoy the transparent waters of this natural swimming pool by snorkeling around. During the tour you will also visit some of the view points and see the gigant bromelias growing in this peninsula. During your days in Barra Grande enjoy the calm waters of Ponta do Mutá and make sure you will stay until the sunset, which is a real spectacle on this beautiful beach. An entire day must also be decicated for an excursion to the nearby islands, one of them more beautiful than another. This tour is also an excellent way to enjoy sun and the sea.

Once you are in the region combine Barra Grande with Itacaré and why not even with Salvador, and get familiar with some of the most interesting sights of Bahia.

Honeymoon in Brazil: turquose sea, white sand beaches and palm trees

During many years I worked closely with travellers looking for a dream destination to spend their honeymoon. Of course there are as many different attributes for a honeymoon as there are wedding couples, but based on my experiences I would say that 80% of all the honeymoon requests include the following three elements: Crystal clear turquoise waters, white sand beaches and palm trees. Simple, isn’t it?

Honeymoon

Honeymoon

Well once the requirements related with the natural setting has been full filled the next question coming up is often related with the accommodation. First of all it has to be private, preferably a villa or bungalow type of accommodation with a private pool if possible. Secondly the standard of the facilities and the services has to be high and offer something special for honeymooners, like welcome champagne, free candle light dinner…or at least some rose petals over the bed or the bath.

I used to ask myself what makes honeymoon so special then? Why is it different from the other trips and why people have so many expectations on it? Sometimes it sounds a like a very stressful thing to be organized, as each and every moment of it has to be more than perfect. However I do agree that the stress over the honeymoon is morely likely to happen during the preparations. Once you reach the destination with your spouse, get accommodated in your bungalow, step on that white sand beach and see how the palm trees sway in the breeze all the stress you had suddenly disappears.

Well, why am I writing about honeymoon requirements then? Simply because Brazil has several destination fullfilling these expectations, and we would like to give you some tips where to spend your dream honeymoon in Brazil. As there are as many ways to spend the honeymoon as there are couples, we haver listed below some possible honeymoon destinations with short description.

Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha

Among the top tree honeymoon destination in Brazil are certainly is the island of Fernando de Noronha, the southern coats of Bahia and the well developed region of Porto de Galinhas with large variety of accommodation option. Why these three then?

First of all Fernando de Noronha is a destination for a lover of nature and virgin beaches, which should always be the main reason when planning a trip to Noronha. The beauty and the pureness of the island are indescribable, sinceraly there must not be too many places where the conservation of the nature has been so well done as in Fernando de Noronha. Here you will be accommodated in a small pousada, whether the nivel is luxurious or raither cozy with personalized treatment, it’s up to your personal choice. Fernando de Noronha is a once in a life time experience!

Porto de Galinhas

Porto de Galinhas

The region of Porto de Galinhas has a large infraestructure when it comes to tourism. The large variety of accommodation options will guarantee the fact that during your honeymoon you will be accommodated exactly in the kind room, villa or bungalow as you wish. Here you will find bungalows with private pool, stressless all inclusive hotels and large range of other services and activities without forgetting the beautiful natural settings of this coast with plenty of white sand beaches and palm trees. Do you want to pamper yourself during your honeymoon, go to Porto de Galinhas!

Last, but definitely not least the southern coast of Bahia. I could bet that among the Brazilians themselves, such destinations as Arrail d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Maraú in the southern coast of Bahia are probably the top destinations when spending their honeymoon in Brazil. These destinations are real hideaways with magnificant nature, seducing beaches and lush vegetation. Here you will find some very luxurious, but still intime accommodation options, where you will be able to a the most romantic honeymoon ever. The southern Bahia is a place to relax and simply enjoy the pure harmony and tranquily of the region.

White sand beaches of Mangue Seco, Bahia

Mangue Seco village

Mangue Seco village

The novel of “Tieta, the goat girl“, written by Jorge Amado is placed in Mangue Seco, a naturally beautiful village located in the northern part of Bahia very close to the frontier with the state of Sergipe. The distance from Salvador is about 225 km, and the easiest way to reach Mangue Seco is hiring a transfer all the way to the village of Pontal, the closest access to Mangue Seco. Mangue Seco is not accesible by car, and therefore the last step is to cross the river by boat. Thanks to the distant location Mague Seco has preserved the tranquility until today.

Like the name says, Mangue Seco is characterized by dry mangrove trees, rivers and dunes. The long white sand beaches ranked into top three of Bahia, are ideal for a swim and sunbathing. Mangue Seco is divided into two parts, the pousadas and the restaurants are concentrated on the river side and on the other side of the dunes you have a those magnificant waves of the Atlantic Ocean. So if you are planning to visit Mangue Seco, don’t expect your pousada to be located in front of the beach, the view you might have is going to be a river view, not a sea view. However this fact doesn’t make Mangue Seco any less attracting than the other Bahian destinations. To go to the beach you have two options, either walk the distance of approximately 1,5 km (depending on where exactly your pousada is located) or hire a buggy ride, which includes a return transfer as well. On the long beach of Mangue Seco there is space for everybody, and it’s up to you whether you prefer laying down in a hammock or enjoying the sun in a deck chair. The rustic beach bars serve drinks, snakcs and meals.

Mangue Seco

Mangue Seco

Mangue Seco enjoys a laid back atmosphere with certain tranquility, which makes it an ideal place for couples and for anyone looking for full relaxation. In addition to the days at the beach, you will also have an opportunity to participate on some interesting excursions in the region. The most popular is a buggy ride on dunes, but in fact you can even climb over the dunes to enjoy the sunset on your own if you wish. When taking excursion we would recommend you to negociate with the buggy drivers and take a day trip all the way to the village of Barra de Siribinha. The trip along the coast itself is an enjoyable experience, and once you reach Barra de Siribinha you are ready to enjoy some delicious seafood on the beach. This peaceful fisherman village has natural beauty and is a perfect place to have a bath either in the sea or in the river. You can also visit a place called Cavalo Russo, and slide down to the refreshing lake situated on roots of this huge dune.

The way to the beach

The way to the beach

When the night falls Mangue Seco doesn’t have too much to offer. There might be some activities on the main square of the village or in the simple bars of the locals, but don’t expect any unique night life emotions. Here the beauty of the night is a starry sky with soft wind. Those who are looking for a peaceful destination without loudy parties and too crowded beaches to spend Christmas and New Years Eve, should seriously considered Mangue Seco as an option. In case you started your journey from Salvador it might be interesting for you not return there when leaving Mangue Seco. The capital of Sergipe, Aracaju is just about 110 km away from Mangue Seco and has an airport connecting with the principal cities of the country. If you have a chance don’t miss the attractions of Sergipe either, being the spectacular canyon of Xingó one of the most interesting ones. However this is something to be discussed later in our future blog posts. Our other Bahia related blog posts:

Brazil Diversity recommends:

  • Pousada Asa Branca – A white mansion kind of building in front of the river offering good tourist class accommodation. Pousada Asa Branca offers also an excellent restaurant with some of the most delicious meals of the village.
  • Pousada Fantasias do Agreste – Centrally located rustic pousada with tourist class accommodation.
  • Pousada O Forte – Bungalow type of accommodation up to four persons, just a short walk away from the heart of the village. O Forte is a good option if you want to be surrounded by nature and tropical gardens.
